The Sicilian Mentor & Giving
“My Philanthropic Pledge” by Warren Buffet (Excerpt from “Fortune” magazine, July 5, 2010)
“First, my pledge: More than 99% of my wealth will go to philanthropy during my lifetime or at death. Measured by dollars, this commitment is large. In a comparative sense, though, many individuals give more to others every day.
Millions of people who regularly contribute to churches, schools, and other organizations thereby relinquish the use of funds that would otherwise benefit their own families. The dollars these people drop into the collection plate or give to United Way mean forgone movies, dinners out, or other personal pleasures.”
Yes, he is a man of great wealth. But he also sees the greatness in giving back. Something I learned from my mother, Nancy M. DiMino. “Give…Expect nothing in return.”
It is in this spirit I created the Nancy M. DiMino Scholarship. I sponsor a child in Malaysia. And now my latest undertaking: Aids Project Los Angeles with the Disneyland Half Marathon. I will be raising money for this fantastic organization that assists individuals who are sticken with this disease.
Nearly 1.2 million Americans are now living with HIV, and 56,000 more will be infected this year! These aren’t just numbers; this is impacting real people and their families. For 25 years, AIDS Project Los Angeles has been providing food, home health care, and other basic needs to thousands of people whose lives are affected by HIV/AIDS. Many of these people are living in poverty and have few places to turn.
As I do with my other causes, I will tithe 10% of my earnings towards this great cause. Will you join me and give? By giving – we are getting. Do whatever you can large or small to help. The future is in our hands. Become a Warren Buffet.
Thank you,
Maurice
