Succeeding in your Public Speaking Career

Succeeding in your Public Speaking Career

Practice makes perfect – this saying is true for public speaking just like it is for any other field. To overcome the fear of public speaking, you will need to start speaking in public. However, if a large gathering seems too much for you to handle during the initial stages, you may ask a small group of friends and family to act as your audience and practice delivering speeches.

Ask this group to review your performance seriously and offer feedback that will help you correct your mistakes and perform better the next time. You may even join some training classes or use online tutorials to sharpen your skills. Whatever your choice, don’t give up easily after a few attempts as mastering the art of public speaking will need consistent effort and patience on your part.

Once you have overcome the initial goose bumps, you should start searching for speaking opportunities in your area where you can practice your public speaking skills. Try to get as many opportunities as you can to speak in front of a live audience, as no mock setting can match the real life experience of speaking to a large gathering. You can try to get in touch with Associations or Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs etc. to find out if they can let you have some public speaking jobs.

According to some effective public speaking tips, you should not imitate anyone. People starting out as public speakers often have larger-than-life views of what successful speakers do. To become successful, they try hard to bring some idealistic qualities into their public speaking that they presently don’t have. In all these efforts, they somehow miss their natural flair and ultimately fail to touch the high (and often unrealistic) standards that they have set for themselves. So, stay away from such things.

Try to be your true self, bringing an unmatched enthusiasm and love for public speaking that can ultimately impress your audience. Remember – when you can be yourself in front of people, you will be able to do much better as a public speaker than when you try to be someone else.

So, start developing intuitive public speaking skills to make the most of those public speaking jobs that come your way.

Reading your article, Maurice, took me down memory lane to why I joined a Toastmasters Club 9 years ago. By just showing up and being willing to participate at weekly meetings with a group of people who wanted me to succeed, I honed my speaking skills exponentially. Toastmasters International is a cost effective organization that can get people on the Speaking Track to Career Success. Thanks for your article of encouragement!

Interesting , how would I make use of this?

I believe the best way way to make use of this or anything…is to give it “Try.” We are so quick to put up roadblocks even before we give ideas a try. So I challenge you and everyone else who reads this blog to give a new idea a try. That’s the Sicilian Way.

Heard about this site from my friend. He pointed me here and told me I’d find what I need. He was right! I got all the questions I had, answered. Didn’t even take long to find it. Love the fact that you made it so easy for people like me. More power
