Public Speaking Commentary

When is it a career and not a hobby?

According to Anthony Robbins:  “One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular.”

I was quite successful at selling and renting post production equipment. I was known as the “Million Dollar Man” because I would generate sale that were north of the million dollar mark. My company liked me. My boss liked me. And I was having a good run.

Then I was introduced to my passion, Public Speaking. I slowly dabbled in it. I joined Toastmasters and that satisfied the immediate gratification. As I grew – I wanted more. What’s the expression…I tasted blood and wanted more!

I took the necessary training. Invested into seminars, boot camps and coaches. I was slowly creating a brand. I started to go out on the road giving seminars. Not a lot in the beginning but as I improved so did the number of engagements.

Then something happened. I hit a cross-roads. I knew that if I continued down this path…Speaking would just be a hobby. I would be dabbling in it and not making a serious attempt at it.

So I decided to make the Cortes move. “Burn my ships so there was no turning back.” So three years ago I decided to quit my very lucrative sales career and pursue Public Speaking. I knew that I had to move forward and move forward in a strong way.

I have never regretted making that decision. Are you ready to make similar decision. Not so much as to burn your boats but to make a definite decision to pursue your goal, your career, your whatever.

I would like to know. Leave a comment and let’s discuss.

Thank you.

Ciao,

Maurice
